Fasting Weight Loss Rates for Juice Fasting, Water Fasting and Dry Fasting. Mon, 08 Dec 2008 04:26:22 +0000 Tom Coghill Weight Loss Per Day, Week, Month.

Fasting Weight Loss Rates

The main benefit offered by a fast, to those who wish to lose weight, is the speed of the weight loss. To see a person drop 30-to-40 pounds in a 30-day juice fast is to see a person totally transform his life. Self-esteem is given a boost and for the first time in their life, discipline becomes a lifestyle. The fast becomes a catalyst for a total life overhaul by weight loss. People start dressing better, showing more confidence, becoming more organized, more dedicated in relationships and more at peace.

Dry Fasting Weight Loss Rates

Fasting weight loss rates are highest with dry fasting. Using an enema then dry fasting for 2 days can drop, 8 lbs. from the colon, 5 lbs. in water and 2 lbs. in body fat. The detoxification is powerful and you can feel health surging through your body as soon as you go back to juicing but the weight loss is really only 2 lbs.

Fasting Weight Loss Rates
Using an Enema

The rate of weight loss is always more when using an enema. Anything in the colon such as the pulp from juice will be used for calories. When the colon is empty there is also a reduction in bulk that flattens the stomach. This weight loss from have an empty colon is not permanent.

Fasting Weight Loss Rates Vary According to Metabolism

The slower your metabolism is, the slower the weight loss. I have seen a person lose over 100 lbs. on a 44 day juice fast and another person lose as little as 4 lbs on a 10 day water fast, and they were walking 5 miles a day without any fatigue.

Weight Loss Rates Reduce
as the Fast Continues

Initially, weight loss can be as high as three-to-four pounds per day, but as the fast continues, the average loss can be one pound or even as low as 1/2 lb per-day. If you are juice fasting and not losing weight, the juice is supplying all the calories you need. You may have to cut down on the juices or alternate between water fasting and juice fasting to increase weight loss.

Permanent Weight Loss

I encourage everyone to develop life long healthy disciplines such as exercise, periodic juice and water fasting, and a diet high in raw fruits and veggies. With a discipline thought life this possible and the weight loss is permanent. Anything less than that is a band aid. You will do better if you focus on the destination rather than the scale.
When you are new to fasting there is a tremendous excitement and enthusiasm that boosts disciple but it will not last forever.

When that enthusiasm ends, you will naturally regress to your regular patterns of living and if they are unhealthy you lose all the benefits gained by fasting.
Try to stay focused on the healthy things you are doing to improve your life rather than being consumed with the number of pounds lost each day. Water retention can vary your weight five pounds so watching the scale can be frustrating. The best motivation to fast is for physical and spiritual health. Be patient; the fasting process is slow. Be thankful the toxins are leaving your body. Do not have unrealistic expectations. Give your body the time it needs to do the work of cleansing.

Weight Loss Support Books

If you have wrestled with weight gain and feel frustrated, Fasting to Freedom is tool for you to achieve permanent weight loss. You will never regret buying this book. Most people read it over and over again to support them with their fast. If you buy Eating in Freedom you will be able to increase your discipline through some simple techniques that work. Extreme Health Recipes and The Perfect Diet will help you develop a life-long diet that will support your weight loss.

Dr. Sanford Siegal’s COOKIE DIET™ Mon, 14 Apr 2008 08:57:45 +0000 Tom Coghill
Dr. Sanford Siegal's COOKIE DIET™

Dr. Sanford Siegal’s COOKIE DIET™

Florida diet doctor Sanford Siegal is author of the 2001 book “Is Your Thyroid Making Your Fat?” Sanford Siegal Cookie Diet suggests going on an 800-calorie a day diet to test and see if you had a thyroid problem. After 21 days on the cookie diet at 800 calories a day, a low level of weight loss or failure to lose are both considered evidence of a likely thyroid slowdown, according to Siegal. You’ve read about Siegal in the past here at the Thyroid site. Siegal, who has treated many thyroid patients at his weight loss clinic, shared his thoughts in 2001 on the Synthroid contoversy.

Cookie Diet and Thyroid Problems

And back in 2002, Dr. Sanford Siegal and I were together featured in a Woman’s World magazine article, titled “The Thyroid Cure.” That magazine included a recipe for “thyroid-boosting diet cookies.” The Woman’s World recipe was loaded with sugar, eggs, oats, Chex cereal, and other high-fat, high starch, high-sugar ingredients, and according to Dr. Siegal, had nothing to do with his actual cookie recipe. (Read what Dr. Siegel has to say about the Woman’s World “thyroid-boosting diet cookie” recipe and whether these cookies would actually help you lose weight.)

Cookie Diet Assists Weight Loss

Now, Siegal and his Cookie Diet is back in the news again, this time with a repackaging of the famous “cookies” and a major marketing push to promote what is now being called the “Cookie Diet,” on which Siegal claims patients lose 15 pounds per month.

How Does the Cookie Diet Work?

Siegal’s Cookie Diet plan is actually a very low-calorie diet, in which six of the special Siegal cookies are eaten when hungry during the day, along with eight glasses of liquid, and only one meal is eaten, dinner, consisting of 6 ounces of lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish or seafood only), plus one cup of vegetables.

The total calorie count of the Cookie Diet comes out to approximately 800 calories per day, and total carbohydrate intake is about 70 grams per day, making Siegal’s program an extremely low-calorie, low carbohydrate diet.

What is not as frequently mentioned is that reportedly, as many as 60 percent of patients on the Cookie Diet are also prescribed appetite suppressant drugs, and another 25 percent are prescribed thyroid hormones.

The cookies, which Siegal claims have amino acids with appetite suppressant properties, are available in chocolate, raisin or coconut flavors, but even Siegal admits that they don’t taste very good. Don’t look for them on your local store shelves anytime soon, however. Siegal’s cookies are available only to patients at his weight loss clinics (five are in Florida, and one is in Montreal), as part of his estimated $400 a month weight loss treatment program.

Is Dr. Sanford Siegal’s Cookie Diet Effective?

Some weight loss experts say that any diet that provides only 800 calories a day is bound to work, but at what price? Critics say that the diet provides far too few calories to maintain health and energy, and is seriously lacking in fruits and vegetables. (1 cup a day of vegetables doesn’t make a dent in the recommendation that we eat 5-9 servings a day of vegetables and fruit). Others have alleged that the Cookie Diet doesn’t provide sufficient vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Even Siegal admits that the Cookie Diet is not meant to be used for long periods of time. Many diet experts say that once people resume normal eating habits, they will regain the weight lost on drastic diets like this one.

Medifast Diet Review Wed, 09 Jan 2008 12:19:35 +0000 Tom Coghill medifastMedifast is a diet that takes you into an intermediate fasting state as inferred by the name. Medifast uses meal replacement products that are formulated to be low-calorie, low-fat, and contain a balance of vitamins and minerals.

Meal replacement do assist people in staying disciple and getting an accurate amount of calories per meal. It is more expensive than regular eating but cheaper than restaurant living. Powdered meal replacements and juicing, could be a good choice for weight loss. The addition of fresh juice would bring balance to the program. The ease of preparation can conveniences would be an advantage would be for people who, travel, work long hours or do not have time to make healthy meals.

The most popular Medifast plan is called “5 and 1″. This plan (800-1000 calories daily) comprises 5 meal replacements and one “real” meal containing a lean protein and vegetables and salad. At a range of 800-1000 calories daily the body will enter a mild state of ketosis using fat, dead cells and internal waste for fuel.

Medifast claim a weight loss of 2-5 pounds per week on the “5 and 1″ plan. To me, this seems accurate as juice fasting can be double to tipple that.

Medifast the company is over 20 years old and so they have a proven track record.

One thing I do like hearing is about clinical research so lacking in many programs. Fasting needs clinical research, but due to the fact that it is difficult to make money on it, fasting research is almost non existent. This Medifast program study looked at patients who attended Medifast clinics. The research is as follows.

Research On The Medifast Diet

Johns Hopkins University Study shows Type II Diabetics Lost Twice as Much Weight using Medifast as Those on an ADA Diet.

OWINGS MILLS, Md., December 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Medifast, Inc. (AMEX: MED) is pleased to announce the preliminary 34-week results from its one year and 34 week diabetes study conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health.

Preliminary results of the study show that those study volunteers on the Medifast Diet for Diabetics lost twice as much weight as compared to those following basic nutrition recommendations from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Study results show that those on the Medifast Diet for Diabetics program lost an average of 16 pounds versus the ADA diet group that lost an average of 8 pounds. Additionally, two-thirds of those on the Medifast program lost at least 5% of their weight, which is a standard measure of the Federal Drug Administration’s (FDA) threshold to indicate clinically significant weight loss, versus one-quarter of those on the ADA diet

Compliance data indicates that almost twice as many people on the Medifast program were able to complete the weight loss portion of the study.

“These results suggest that the Medifast diet was easier to adhere to than the comparison diet,” says Dr. Larry Cheskin, the principal investigator and Hopkins study examiner. “These results may be important for people who are overweight and have Type II Diabetes. We’re telling people they need to lose weight and manage their diet or risk serious health consequences, so it is useful to study what weight loss method is most effective.”

Medifast asked Dr. Cheskin to conduct a study after receiving numerous reports from patients that Medifast products helped control their diabetes symptoms.

“I have been a diabetic for about five or six years. As of today I am completely off all my sugar and cholesterol medications and my blood pressure is normal. My total weight loss on this program has been 50 pounds. I’ll tell you; this has made the difference to me in life and death. I truly believe Medifast has been a miracle in my life,” says Josephine Shaw, a diabetic patient who worked closely with Medifast’s Medical Director, Dr. Wayne Andersen.

“In my twenty years as a critical care physician using surgery and medicines, I have never experienced the amazing improvement in disease that I have in the two years we have been focused on nutritional intervention as the first line defense against disease,” says Dr. Andersen. “Within 4 to 16 weeks our patients are coming off their cholesterol and diabetic medication and showing dramatic improvements in the symptomentology of several other conditions.”

The researchers randomized two groups of Type II diabetic volunteers. One group was given the Medifast Plus for Diabetics defined-formula meal replacement diet of soups, oatmeal, bars and a variety of shakes. The other group was asked to follow a diet based on ADA nutrition guidelines, shop for their own food and manage their own portions, but had the same guidance from the doctors, counselors and dietitians in the study as the Medifast group.

The study found those randomized to the Medifast program had an average 7.5% decrease in body fat, a clinically significant amount.

In addition to weight loss, the initial study results are that Medifast participants sustained an average 9% decrease in blood fasting glucose and an average 19% decrease in insulin levels. Medifast participants also achieved an average 12% decrease in fasting triglycerides, and an average 9% increase in HDL (good) cholesterol. Their levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly.

What’s more, a number of patients in the Medifast group were able to significantly reduce the number and dose of their medicines. Participants on the Medifast diet saw an average of 27% improvement in their Health Related Quality of Life, which measures such things as physical functioning, energy levels and general health.

“Until now, drug therapy has been the gold standard for diabetics. These results suggest that nutritional therapy could be more effective early on, reduce cost and provide better health for diabetics,” said Brad MacDonald, Medifast’s CEO.

“If diabetics are being told to lose weight, initial results show that they may be better off on a portion controlled, defined-formula diet,” said Dr. Cheskin. “This is important information for Type II diabetics seeking weight loss.”

This release contains forward-looking statements, which may involve known and unknown risks, uncertainties and other factors that may cause Medifast’s actual results and performance in future periods to be materially different from any future results or performance suggested by these statements. Medifast cautions investors not to place undue reliance on forward-looking statements, which speak only to management’s expectation on this date.

If you are interested Medifast has a one week special. Medifast

We would like comments on those who have tested the Medifast diet program.
