Ask a Question

fasting questionsHey Tom, once again, thanks for all your responses. I had another question since now I am on day one of the fast. Could one consume jelly jam or say marmolaid jam or is that breaking the rules. Also what would warning signs be as time to STOP. I am doing this on my own accord and not with a doctor.
Nathan

If you eat marmolaid that is a marmolaid fast. If you blend it with water, it will be a marmolaid juice fast. You may be the first to try it, going where no marmolaid eater has gone before. Not technically a juice fast but you will detoxify.

If you add up the extra fat on your body then multiply it by about 3500 calories per day. Then divide it by 1500 calories for the first week and 1200 calories for the second week and 1000 calories or less for the 3rd week then you can get an idea of how long you can fast on water. As to juice you could live on it. I heard of a guy who did 3 years to protest the War in Vietnam. When you see a lot of ribs and when you sit down and feel bone then you are getting close to using all your body fat. At that stage the body’s metabolism will drop down to 600 calories per day. The end of the human calorie reserves may be over 90 days for people with 40 lbs. of excess fat and a slow metabolism.

So what exactly stops a fast. Like the instant say a peanut is eaten or what.
Nathan

One peanut will not stop a fast but 300 peanuts will. It is all about calories and metabosism. If your body has less calories than your body need your body starts to detoxify detoxification. Technically, one glass of juice will end a water fast and any food will end a juice fast. But there are many ways to detoxify the body. Read Detox Methods

How do you combat hunger during the first couple of days? Any tips?

  2. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

Using the enema eliminates hunger completely. I do not like to use it as it is not the most fun event but when I cannot started I just use it twice on day one and after that I am fasting.

Another trick is to drink water for the first day. By afternoon, you will be in the detox cycle and the hunger will disappear but usually you get headaches and irritable with it.

  3. erin erin says:

This is my first fast. I have read through all the information on this site and have decided to do a 10 day water fast. The only thing that I have concerns with are how to prevent diarrhea. I work outside of town and would like to know if there is a preventative measure I can take to work with me.

  4. erin erin says:

I was going to continue taking Calcium + Vit D Pills, One-a-Day Vit, and Vit-C pills during a water fast. Is this ok?

  5. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

You will not get diarrhea on a water fast but the very first juice you drink, will usually cause diarrhea for about 30 minutes. It is another cleansing reaction. Diarrhea may happen on a juice fast as the pulp build up in the colon, and as it does not move through the body reacts. When this occurs using the enema, will stop the reaction.

Do not take vitamins during a water fast they just sit in the stomach as there is no digestion occurring.

Water fasting is very difficult unless you have a slow metabolism, if you get weak have some sweetened herbal tea.

If you want, you can send us a pic and info and we can make a post, where you can post your fasting journal. EX “Day one: felt a bit weak, bad headache but made it.”

  6. erin erin says:

    I have a profile but I can’t find a place to start a journal.

  7. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

Send me an email to tom@helpme.ph with your info, about any health condition, goals, where you live, etc and I will make a post for you. Oh Yea also a larger pic.

        Hi Praiya004
        Welcome to fasting.ws
You can leave messages at the bottom of the page on fasting progress reports.
Waight loss is not an exact sciance when fasting.
After 3 days the body converts fat into fuel. if you do have loose skin then a {PT}can help you tighten loose skin with a healthy exersise program.
        Best regards Keith.

    An Email from Marisa,
Hi Tom. Sorry to e-mail you but I could not figure out how to get a question posted or where to do it. I have just registered on the site today however have been reading and researching fasting for the past few weeks. Nice new site by the way!

I am on day seven of a juice and water fast. I am 37 years old, 5-7 and at the start of the fast weighed 157lbs and have since lost 10lbs as of today. You have stated that 1 pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories, right? An ideal weight for me is 130lbs (that is not high school skinny either). I calculated that I could easily do a thirty-day fast based on burning between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day, without getting too thin. Does that sound about correct to you?

I started this journey not so much for weight loss but for healing. I have had several c-spine surgeries over the past few years along with many other medical procedures to try to correct problems in my neck. Do you know of anyone that has fasted for healing, that has had severe neck and back problems? If so, what results did they see? Also, on the old website there was a section, Fasting and Cleansing, I think, and it spelled out what to expect during the different phases of a fast. I can’t seem to find it today
on the new site. Is it still there and if so where do I find it? I have enjoyed the comfort of knowing what expect, it has made the journey easy so far.

    Thank you so much,
    Marisa

  9. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi, Marisa
Just post your question on fasting questions.
I am glad to answer you here.
But please email coghill.tom@gmail.org as we are moving servers and closing this email account.

Yes that may be right for a weight loss rate, but it depends on your metabolism and you will lose less weight the longer you fast.

To find info, you can us the search at the top right to find most of your info. Search “stages” that should work.

I had a serious back pain healed after a water fast but it was a temporary injury. But the serious damage is only by surgery.

Nerves do heal but slowly and not after permanent damage.
Thanks for the compliment on the site.
    Always willing to serve.

  10. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Question:
Do you know of any cases of fasting helping people with MS.

My cousin has MS. She is in her 40’s, I told her I would look around and ask you. Also,
a girl in our youth group came up told us about how she has been diagnosed with by polar type 2. Is fasting a god idea there.

Also I have a friend paralyzed. Does help some scenarios so I was curious with your opinion on these things. I hope you are well Tom. Cheers

If nothing else, it is good to drink fresh juice daily to benefit health and increase the quality of life even if confined to a wheel chair.
As to bi-polar type 2… the best to have shorter juice fasts under 3 days or the releasing toxin can trigger an episode. Best choice is juice with lots of salads then a 2 day fast, then back to salads and fruit then a 4 day juice fast and back to salads and fruit then longer
periods of fasting. Yes fasting can stabilize Bi-Polar type 2 but once again, no hard facts or research.

  11. Cheryl Atkins says:

How long should a teenager (about 16) fast for?

is one week per month good enough???

what is a good time period?

  12. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Cheryl,
Yea one week on juice is fairly easy to do. Juicing with a juice extractor is very sustaining. One week a month would be a good way to do it and not terrify those around you.
    Tom

  13. Chelsea says:

Im starting a one week fast next sunday and was planning on doing a water fast but my aunt takes this thing called natrual calm it’s a magnesium supplement and she said the next day after you take it, it really cleans you out if you know what I mean. Do you think during my water fast if I drank a small cup of this in the evening it would be alright or should I stick to water?

  14. Matt says:

My allergies get really bad around this time: constant sneezing, pressure, headaches, and a really sore throat, not to mention asthma.
Will fasting help me with my allergies/asthma? And if so how long/what type of fast do I need to do?

    ~Matt

  15. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Matt,
Juice fasting is great for allergies. Try 10 days to 21 days.

  16. lucas says:

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for all your work and advice and running this web site. I just started a 40 day fast and was going to alternate between juice and water. Any suggestions on how many days at a time on each? Also how soon should you start to see weight loss begin? I am on day 4 and have been on fresh fruit and veg juice from my own juicer and I feel great but haven’t seen any weight change yet. I am drinking about a pint of fruit juice and a pint of veg juice a day along with 2-3 pints of water.

  17. Frenchie says:

    Hi there
I just found this great site…. and it brings me great hope when I read about your success stories and your learning all together.

I have been going through lots of stress for the last years (work harassement, father died, family problems etc etc)

I saw my naturopath this week: it turns out I have quite some problems to take care of. Right now I am soooo tired, have no motivation, am depressed, discouraged and am lost.

    She says I have: liver and kidney that are engorged; heavy metals; viruses; inersitial problems; problems of lymph, circulatory, adrenal; surenales (production of cortisone);
mitochondria oxidation; digestive oxxidation, good organic buffers; very low cellurlar hydration; and smaller problems with the digestive system, pancreasand minerals
blood ph is 7.51, urine is 5.84

i seem also to be gluten intolerant as well as cheese, alcool, beer, sour cream, yeast

long list, I know… but well that is my reality right now

Have been and still am on antidepressants for 3 years + valium based med for sleeping

she put me on protein shakes three times a day as snacks and wants me to eat meals as well. I don’t feel hungry, I feel I am in a fat bubble (put on 40 lbs with the meds)

she said I cannot afford to do detox as my system is already overloaded (Two months ago I did the basic cleanse, the colon cleanse and the metal detox)….

I am pretty much at the end of the rope here, cuse I don’t know what to think or do anymore. I am on sick leave. where do I start? should I go on a juice or water cure somewhere where it is quiet? how can I do something and not be afraid of bad impact on my body?

If you have any ideas, comments or plans you may wish to share with me, I would love to hear them…

ps as I am not familiar where to post questions and replys, could you cc your answers to me at fguiet@acn.net? I will eventually figure out how the posts work…. in the mean time, thanks for sending it cc as well. I would so much not want to lose any of the precious info you might send me

thanks to all of you – if you made it through tough times, I can too… I just need a plan….

    Have a great day
    Francine

  18. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Frenchie,
I would ignore all advice of your naturopath.
The amount of testing to come up with that kind of diagnosis would indeed be very expensive.
It all sounds sooo scientific “mitochondria oxidation; digestive oxidation, good organic buffers; very low cellular hydration” The diagnosis causes red flags for me. Recommending not to detox as your body too toxic to handle it??? I bet the bill you paid here already is extensive with little health changes. The doctor is saying your stomach is suffocating from lack of oxygen and you and not drinking enough fluids or eating fiber.

Protein shakes are the last thing you should be doing. It increases acid in the blood and reduces alkalinity.

You need to buy a juice extractor and make juice daily with a fresh salad. Remove all processed oils from your diet. Then mentally prepare for a juice fasting. If you get liver or kidney pain during the fast, eat a salad to slow the detox.

WOW, antidepressants for 3 years + Valium based med for sleeping. Wow you will be a nervous wreck and totally messed up mentally.
The dugs increase nervousness, confusion, reduce discipline and slow metabolism. I bet you feel dragged out, tired, and fazed out with times of being very edgy, nervous and frustrated. It will be a cycle.

When you juice fast, cut the meds in half for 3 days then 1/4 for three more then cold turkey. It will not be easy.

  19. Michael says:

I am currently on a juice fast (day 13) and I have lost 16 pounds. My goal is to lose a total of 40 pounds (from 205 lbs to 165 lbs). First of all, is this weight lost goal unrealistic on a juice fast? Second, should I be concerned about lack of protein while juice fasting? Last of all, when I break the fast, how do I go about doing so safely and without gaining the weight back? Thanks for your support and good luck to all other “fasters” out there! It really works!

  20. Amber White says:

Looking for some answers…Just finished a 7 day fast. Mostly I consumed water but, I did have about 3 cups of tea and two natural blueberry/pome beverages. Anyway, the last day of the fast I noticed my skin breaking out extremely in pimple type boils that seemed to be itchy or irritated…Then I broke the fast with a peach, later a salad, and even later a full meal of toxic foods I am sure and alcohol! Now day 2 of eating trying to eat all raw and organic. Just wondering if this is normal. The break-out is on my neck and back. Will it clear-up sooner than later? Any tips for a natural solution?

  21. Kristy_lw says:

    Hello,

If someone could help me with answer please. Doing water fast do i need to take any vitamins or supplements from those listed in the articles or I take them when switch over to juice fast?

    Thank you,
    Kristy

  22. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Kristy,
I recommend not taking vitamins during water fasting but do take them with the juice.

  23. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Amber White,
Fasting detoxifies the skin and it is common to get pimples or a boil during the fast. It should clear up soon.

  24. jay408 says:

Can you fast and take benefiber, or a stool softner, or even a colon cleanse?

  25. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

Can you fast and take Benefiber, or a stool softner, or even a colon cleanse? I would skip stool softeners are you have no stool to soften. LOL or the Benefiber as they are mucus forming ( mostly psylium )but any colon cleanser is good.

  26. Natalie says:

I would like to fast…how can I create a support page? Is this where I can ask questions?

I completed a 22.5 day fast April 3. I was only drinking water. I was living in New York City and continued my part time job while fasting. It was one of the best times in my life. I think I got pretty close to losing all my body fat, but I didn’t complete the re-feeding process ideally. Also I have not lost my compulsive overeating habits, however I have been eating mostly raw/vegan. So here I am in August, carrying about 15 lb of excess fat, trying to lose weight through a good diet and activity, but I see fasting as the only solution to getting where I want to be.

Many a night I have set the intention to begin a water fast the following day, only to give in to my desire for food. Maybe I should ease into it with juices first before diving into the water fast.

Other than the fat, and the toxicity that is revealed in my breakouts, and some depression, I don’t really have any other serious health challenges.

Sorry if I have posted in the inappropriate place. I hope I can find some help here. Thanks for the great information you provide.

  27. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Natalie
You can post where you want. For a support page send in some info about you to coghill.tom@gmail.com . Age, weight, reason for fasting, like what you did before and a pic. I will post it and you can get some support. It helps discipline when you know a 800 people per day are reading what you are doing. LOL

  28. Sarah says:

how much weight can i lose on a 15 day water fast?
    i am 21 yrs old , 5′8 and 155 pounds
what do you think my ending weight will be?

  29. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Sarah,
You weightloose it a guess. Is your mabolism fast meduim slow? Slow metabolsim 5 LB meduim metabolsim 15 to 30 LB fast 30 to 40 lb. But metabolism speed is only one of serveral factors that affect wieght loss.

  30. jay408 says:

Can u water fast and drink coffee, or tea?

  31. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

Yes u can water fast and drink coffee, or tea but the cleansing will be reduced and it is very hard on your stomach as there is no food or mucus lining in the stomach to buffer the acids. If you drink 10 coffees a day and cut down to 2 coffees a day you will go through withdrawals. And that would be a step forward. For a heavy coffee drinker starting a fast try 1 to 2 per day and no milk. Herbal tea is great but regular tea is hard on the stomach. Green tea has benifits. Honey is good or dehydrated cane sugar for sweetener.

  32. Kylah says:

    Hi Tom
I am 18 years old and I’m 5′3″. I weigh about 220. I know I am severly overweight. I started a fast last night around 10 pm and have not ate since. I’ve just been drinking water and it helps with hunger pains. I’m just wondering how long I should do this fast to be down to a healthy weight.. around 120 maybe. How much can I expect to lose in the first week with a faster metabolism? & Will my stomach go back to being flat or will it be gross looking? Lol. Thanks.

  33. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Kylah,
I wish is was that easy. x nunber of days and you are at your desired weight. But no… weight loss is complicated and difficult. Do you have water retention, health problems, what is your normal calorie consumption. Do you eat a lot of salt.
How long to fast on water….. I do not recommend water fasting for a first fast. I teach juicing with a juicer then period of water fasting. It increases healing.
You stomach will never be flat without a lot of situps and exercise but it will look good.
Water fasting difficult and breaking a fast even more difficult. I would learn to walk (successful short fasts) before you climb Mt Everest with an extended water fast.
I teach a lifelong system of living, and that will take months to learn. Bandaids are only good for small cuts.
Take the time to learn, test and practice.
I will be here to guide you.

  34. Kylah says:

Okay so what would be a good juice fast? Like an example of one?
    & thank you so much.

  35. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Kylah,
You should slow down and do some reading. Read the juice fasting section, it is very indepth. Most important … read how to break a fast before you do one. Also take a tour of http://compulsive.ws

  36. jay408 says:

CAN YOU WATER FAST AND DRINK ALCOHOL?

  37. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Jay
Sure you can fasting and drink alcohol but the benefits of the fast are removed and reversed during the time of drinking. You will get high quickly crash quickly and feel horrible. I talk from experience. :-)

  38. Random Person says:

How do you get your metabolism back up after fasting??

  39. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Random,
Exercise is the best. You body is more efficient after fasting so eat less and exercise more.

  40. Sarah says:

    17 day

    water and laxative tea fast?

    how much could i lose?

  41. Tah says:

Hi Tom, tomorrow i’m going to begin my first fast. I’m a little scared but I know that it’s something I have to do for my health. As I was reading through the articles, I believe you said a juice fast is the best way to start. would you suggest that even though i’m doing it for my health as far as skin problems and changes in my body. And is there anything else you would suggest for beginners

  42. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Sarah,
I think a 1000 people have asked me to guess the answer to that question. I keep repeating, weight loss during fasting depends on many factors that I cannot predict. Did you read the post on fasting and weight loss? I do not recommend laxatives and water fasting. Better to use an enema or do nothing. Expect 10- 14 of constipation after the fast after using laxatives for that long.

  43. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Tah,
I would get excited rather than afraid. With 300 pages on how to fast and a few thousand questions and answers…. what can I add to that. MMM… Fly to the Philippines and do a year of study with the research team. :-)

  44. cliff says:

Tom My name is cliff Im 43 and in good health about 7 years ago i was 220 and fasted for 60 days an got to 160 with my high school abs back as of september 1 2008 i was 185 i started two weeks ago to fast again im now 174 my ?? is cause i dont remember the stomach pains are they comon I do a complete water fast with just vitimans and protien..are they just hunger pain or what cause somtimes there bad but drinking lots of water helps a little bit Is it ok to drink a couple of gallons a day ?? Cliff

  45. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Cliff
Was that a 60 juice or water fast. Vitamins will cause stomach pain during water fasting and I would skip the protein. Sure drinking lots of water will reduce hunger and not hurt the fast. Could you send in a testimony?

  46. cliff says:

Hey Tom It was a 60 day water fast and at the time i just wanted to loose weight. Now I want to loose weight and for myself to get good health out of it. I quit drinking beer about a month ago and feel better from that to.If i remember 7 years ago my doctor said it would be a good idea to take pure protien with no fat just for my muscles but I think she was afaried I was starving myself and did not think I had control but I do and feel grate Im down to 17% body fat and weigh 170.. You think I dont need protein or vitamins what percent of body fat can I go down to before I have to worry about my body eating my muscle or organs I think thats what she was affarid of but I have a good scale that measures body fat.. And im only at 17 with just a four pack and want a six pack..If I stop with the protein what percent can I go to safely.. thanks Tom….Cliff PS I will put together A Testimony as well and put one In

  47. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Cliff
60 day water fast… wow that is an event requiring intense discipline. That is the longest water fast I have heard of. Your body has lots of protein reserves and I have never heard of one case of protein deficiency in North America. I think is was a fear created by the meat industry. Fasting is a state of controlled catabolism. The body breaks down dead, diseased and dying cells. If the body has protein it does not enter catabolism and there is no healing. You can go to 2 percent body fat safely but you have a slow metabolism so that will be almost impossible.
Best bet is to train brutal hours, 5 days a week after the fast.

Fact: Doctors average 20 minutes of nutritional training and none on therapeutic fasting.

  48. cliff says:

Hey Tom It started about 6 years ago My daughter was 10 and A 1st degree black belt and we were at a tournament and I over heard a Master say he had to do a 30 day fast.So like I said I was about 220 and didnt like it so I started a fast I new I had the Discipline from being around karate for years and years.. So I went and baught a scale It was about $170 It weighs and measures body fat and went one day at a time and logged everything my wife thought I was crazy and got mad cause i wouldnt eat but one week turned into A month into 2 months and 2 weeks water only maybe a few beers the first month on weekends but I lost 60 pounds and had my abs.. I now started again about 2 and A half weeks ago i weighed about 190 and now 170 with 17% body fat Its funny though cause Its now taking longer to get rid of the last bit of fat around the bottom of my 4 pack any advice or just keep on fasting? I work out side and get plenty of movement and been useing my daughters Liptycal for A mile or 2 A day That should do it just keep fasting i guesse Its got to come off yes ??

  49. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Cliff,
Now that is a story. The body conserves more the longer you fast. It also becomes more efficient. That is good and bad. You need less food and get more nutrition out of it but can gain weight after fasting by eating the same diet. So yea, fasting will not hurt you if you are listening to your body and a person with a slow metabolism like yourself can fast long periods with ease. For me, a water fast of 5 days is an act of sheer will and endurance.

  50. lisesheehan says:

i am having a lot of trouble navigating this site….i am looking for fasting support, buddies, people to help each otheer by phone and online. any ideas. thank you

  51. Heather says:

    Hi Tom,

I am looking into juice fasting. I have enjoyed your website and all of the information that you have provided. I have 2 questions that I hope that you can help me with..#1 I am currently taking 40mgs of methadone daily. Would fasting while taking this medication be helpful? What would you recommend?
#2 I have been doing a program called Isagenix, for about 3 months now…it is considered a “whole body cleanse” Have you heard of this program and what is your take on it? Is it comparative to fasting?

Thanks for all of your help,
    Heather

  52. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Heather
Methadone and fasting. Long term usage has is price on the body. You can break the habit during fasting with less pain and withdrawals.
We are conducting a phase I clinical trial and if you quit during the juice fasting it would be significant.
If you want I could call you on the phone. You would be cutting down a % of the methadone daily and waiting at a withdrawal state you can handle. Pure hell but this can be accomplished. Fasting can shorten the withdrawals by %500 percent. Wait until day 3 before cutting down. Then cut 10% for 3 days, then another 10% for 3 days, and follow, the 10% cuts every three days. You may need a longer fast. Methadone withdrawal is hell so get some support. Document every ache and pain.

Most cleansing programs are good but nothing compared to fasting. Never heard of that one.

  53. Susan says:

Hi Tom! Really love your website. I have (I think) an easy question. Ten year type 2 diabetic here determined to not go back on nasty oral medications (been on and off for years; hate the stuff). My numbers did go up to nearly 300 (and down again, up and down) and I started getting the thirst thing (scary). So I went on a mild fast a week ago and now a water fast, day two. Feel great except for thirst thing. Getting readings around 160. Doing frequent meditation, gentle exercise, healing visualization, drinking water. Very very determined to stick with it. You wrote “When water fasting, drink water only when thirsty” but that is hard for me to follow temporarily because of the nasty diabetes side effect of dry mouth/thirsting. I drank a little Pedialyte this morning because I was getting concerned re salt/potassium levels exercising (which I love and do not overdo). I was taking Nopal but stopped. I am 5′8″ and am overweight I now weigh 210 (I was 125 my whole adult life until I met antidepressants; got that out of my life too). Question: How many glasses of water a day should I drink? Any other tips? Thanks!! Susan

  54. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Susan,
The recovery from diabetes was from juice fasting. I am not sure what you are doing will work. We do not even accept people who want to conduct water fasting for treatment. To duplicate our results follow the protocols.
Thirst, yea your electrolytes will probably be messed up. None of our type 2 patients experience thirst.

  55. john says:

can a woman with an underactive thyroid and currently taking medication fast safely with the aim of correcting the thyroid problem? what is the recommendation in such a case?

  56. Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

    Hi John
I recommend stopping the THYROID medication during the fast. A 30 DAY JUICE FAST IS THE NORM.

  57. Haley says:

    Tom,

Why would you suggest stopping Thyroid meds during fast?

  58. jay408 says:

Is there any way to get protein in a juice fast?

  59. LaToya says:

Hi-I went on a loose 40-day Daniel Fast where I abstained from sweets, meats, and dairy. I only ate wheat bread, veggies, fruit, beans, etc. When I came off, I ate normally for a couple of days with no problems. Then, I went on a liquid fast, drinking only smoothies for the most part. When I broke the fast, I had a sever allergic skin reaction over my body (i.e., itching, burning, heat, etc.) when I tried to eat meat, veggies, and cheese. I drink more water, take Benadryl every four hours and it offers very little relief, and even washed with an oatmeal soap. This has never happened before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi LaToya,
We just had a similar reaction here at the hospital after breaking a long fast.
During a fast the colon wall shed it hardened toxic deposits from the diet you mentioned you abstained from.
But much of it stay on the colon wall and becomes loose.
The first meal pushes though the colon like a broom and releases the material that has been stuck to the colon wall for years.
The result is that after about 15 minutes from eating the first meal their is a waver of nausea, stomach upset, bloating, and an explosion in the bathroom. Headaches, and sore muscles with dizziness are also common. That is why we recommend breaking a long fast with soft fruits for 2 days before any harder foods.
The best remedy is to juice fast for 2 or 3 days then break a fast on fruits, for 2 days like mangoes and bananas. Then salads. Try aloe, vitamin E and some essential oils on your skin. Cold shower may also help.

    Hello Tom
I was very much inspired regarding the 40 day juice fast of a certain Filipino pastor in the hospital in Sagada. I am in Bolivia and have done a 21 day orange juice fast previously. I want to ask the question whether an orange juice fast will supply me with enough iron. Also there are two types of oranges in Bolivia – the normal one called “naranja” and a sweeter type called “mandarina”. Please tell me which one would be better for prolonged juice fasting. I am contemplating doing 35 days and after a brief interval, the next will be 70 days. Let me say that my problem never was physical weakness. On the contrary during a juice fast I could run uphill in an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level where there is 20% less oxygen. What I want to know is what juices will give me the necessary nutrients in case I want to fast more than 100 days without feelin weak. Thanks.

    Hi Tom,

I just found a few moments ago that a family member who I love very much and am extremely close to has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I am in the process of getting myself together so that my family will be able to stand with this person both spiritually and physically. I haven’t had an opportunity to peruse the site in depth regarding this, so I apologize if my question is redundant. All I know now that it’s best to starve cancer by eliminating protein & sugar, eating losts of fruit, veggies, and taking vitamins/minerals. Any advice on where we should start would be greatly appreciated (i.e., specific foods, recommended vitamins & minerals, good books to read, etc). This person is 79 years old and on a fixed income, organic foods would be ideal but there are financial issues. We live in the US, so unfortunately coming the Phillippines is not an option. Thanks so much!

    Best,
    tk

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

I would recommend juice fasting combined with standard cancer therapy. We have one case of prostate cancer who is stating he feel healthy without problems but it takes 5 years to verify clinical success. He, Juan Liswig did 44 days on 1/2 liter of verggie juices daily using carrot, beet, cucumber, apple, lemon, celery and local greens. It is best to keep the juice amount as low as possible. As prostate cancer moves slow at the first stage, you can do a fast and check the results. The seeds are the recommended treatment and it very effective with little discomfort. Fasting with a radiation treatment using “seeds” would be optimum.
Suppliments, at least the basics. Essential oil, vitamin Q10, B complex,E for starters. And sage tea. Most alternative cancer supplements and treatments have little value lacking medical proof.

  62. tk says:

Thanks so much for the helpful tips! Just had a few questions: so you wouldn’t recommend any sort of books? What types of essential oil-do you mean the omega 3,6,9? How about green tea?

  63. fp says:

    Tom:

Not sure if this is the right place to post- but I have some questions for you- would be great if you could provide your inputs:

    1. Do you eat salt at all when not fasting? I presume it is a no no during fasting.
    2. Do you ever throw in raw nuts while juice fasting? Would slow the detox and add fat which we are working to get rid of, right?
    3. What about coconut – of a tender coconut? Fat again?
    4. Avocados thrown into juices – would slow the detox?
    5. Garlic/ onions – a big No, right?
    6. Ginger- yes?
    7. Other spices/condiments?
    8. Jaggery?

    Thank you.

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Fp
No salt during the fast….limited sea salt after.
No nut during juice fasting as it stops the detoxification but it would work for muscle mass gain with training.
We recommend coconut oil here at the hospital as we do not have any omega oils. The fat will also stop the fast although with juice it would be a great diet, with a few nuts.
Everything adds calories and will slow the detoxification.
Garlic, onion, ginger, lemon, tobasco line are great mixed with the juice.

  64. fp says:

    Hi Tom:

    A couple more questions:

    1. It can be challenging for someone n cold climates to juice fast- one ends up feeling cold all the time despite hot water drinks. Any suggestions?

    2. Maple syrup is ok to add to juices? Is there a better between honey and maple syrup? or are they both good?

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

I fast in the cold many times and outside in minus 20 c. You get very cold if you stop moving.
Even for ten seconds. LOL It is all in how you dress. To determine your clothing for fasting in cold climates, look at the look at the temperature. If it is below 50 F. put on every piece of clothing you own.
Both honey and maple syrupy are fine during juice fasting.

  65. fp says:

    Tom:

    Three questions:

    1. Ginger added to hot water (or boiled in water) – do you see it as harmful during a juice fast?

    2. Honey added to hot water?

    3. If fasting on spirulina and water – how much spirulina per day is recommended? Two capsule worth?

    Thank you!

  66. fp says:

    One related question-

Did you take five spoons of spirulina at one go or did you divide it into two or three meals/times a day? I wonder if it would make a difference?

    Thank you again!

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Fp,
It is better to take the spirulina several times per day rather than once. It gives me an energy boost and it does not last for more than an hour, but I was fasting sole on spirulina. Considering the nutrient content I am not surprised if the person who live on it for 15 year was not in perfect health. Just a bit boring for me and it causes me super bad gas, that is the worst fart on earth.

  67. fp says:

……and how many days can one safely fast on spirulina and water? I read elsewhere that someone actually lived on spirulina for 15 years- though I am not sure how much spirulina per day he consumed.

    Thank you again.

  68. fp says:

Thanks Tom. So how many days safely would you recommend on spirulina?

  69. Jesse Bruce says:

Tom, I juice fast 21 days at a time 3 to 4 times a year(past 6 years). After breaking my fast the last 4 or 5 times I suspect my blood sugar has risen significantly within a few days – dry mouth, frequent urination at night, weakness, nausea, etc…the symptoms appear to end abruptly after a couple of weeks. I confess to drinking a lot of sugary drinks while fasting. 3 months since ending my last fast, my blood sugar remains high(had it tested) and my doctor has me on metformin.

I am 56, 6′2″, 350lbs…I am starting another fast today. If I drink only orange juice and vegetable juices this time, can I reasonably hope for a reversal of this blood-sugar problem?

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Jesse
We have treated diabetes with 40 days of juice fasting. Total recovery. You need to stop the sugary drinks. Drink less juice but more frequently. Test your blood to see what works. Like 1/4 glass every 40 minutes. Spirulina and sea salt can be added to the juice. Also essential oils and vitamin E. Any green juices are good.

  70. MMShadows says:

I’m sorry to bother you, Tom, but I have a question in general before attempting to begin my juice fast. This may be a stupid question, but is soy milk acceptable at all? And if so, does it matter if it’s flavored? (chocolate, vanilla, etc). Was just curious.

Thank you, by the way, for your response on the other page I posted on. I appreciated it! =)

  71. MMShadows says:

Thanks so much for the responses Tom! I definitely will have to fight the desire to buy soy milk then. I’ve decided to begin in a day or two, to give me a full month before classes kick in again. But after preparing I discovered a few more questions, two being:

if it’s okay to take Organic Flaxseed Oil during the fast (is it recommended, at least?),

and if taking any type of green tea tablet/geltab during the fast will hinder anything? (or is that also allowed/recommended).

Lastly, is Lipton Citrus Green Tea alright to drink, or should I keep that away during the duration of the fast also?

  72. Steve says:

    Hello Tom,

I recently fasted for a 3 weeks, took a week off and then fasted for two more weeks. I have noticed significant hair loss in the front and was wondering if this is normal and is there something I should do to combat it. I really want to fast again for a few weeks, but I’m afraid of losing more hair.

    thanks for your help,
    Steve

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Steve
Hairloss occurs in aproximently 1% of water fasters possibly caused by toxins affecting follicle growth or affecting hormones. The hair regrows but can take up to 3 months. Adding essential oils 2 tablespoons and vitamin E 1200 IU daily should solve the problem. You should be able to take it even when water fasting. I would also add 2 glasses of mixed veggie juice per day.

    Hello Steve,

School starts September 8 and I want to fast I was thinking I would do a juice fast for 10-15 days and go into a water fast for 30-35 days. I have done the juice fast 3 years in a row, but never a water fast. I would also do colonic to help with along detoxing and lessen the side affects (headaches, cramps, hunger pains etc.).I want to be clear minded for school, it’s my senior undergrad and I’m 46. My questions are: how soon should I start? and would it affect me with dealing with school? and how often should I have a colonic done during my fast? would a 40-45 day fast good amount of time? or should I shorten the number of days?I need to be clear minded for school, I need to lose 30 – 50 pounds and I also want to experience the spiritual aspect of fasting. ( prayer also taking Metaphysical classes) What would be the best way to go about doing a fast?

  74. obatalatress says:

    Hello again Steve,
I also wanted to know could I do yoga during my fast and also I want to end food addiction like sugar, cut down on coffee and not crave foods that’s not good for me.

    Hello Tom,

I wrote to you before about my hair loss when I fasted and you suggested 2 Tablespoons of essential oils, I have been looking around and it seems that the ones I’m finding are for aromatherapy, can you tell me what type of essential oils and possibly where to get them? (I’m getting ready for another fast)

    thank you for your help,

Dear Tom, first and foremost i want to say i am so thankful i found this website, here is my question, i am on week 3 today of the Breuss Cancer Cure Fast, i am doing it exactly as he says in his book, i have the biota breuss juices in my fridge and i drink 400ml a day, but i will now cut that to 200ml a day. I have Breast Cancer. The tumor is in my left breast i am 29 years old. the lump appeared nov 2007, and slowly grew. I noticed the lump has decreased since i began the fast 3 weeks ago, and the tumor is not pushing on my skin anymore, the skin was purple, now its pinkish andreturning slowly to a normal color, i also have a lymph under my underarm affected by the cancer the size of a pea when i feel it, my concern is this, the tumor and lymph lump are still present, i havent really noticed them dimishing, i am only drinking the juices recommended by Breuss his tea and 3 liters of filtered water a day, am i doing something wrong? or is the tumor going to start vanishing in the last 3 weeks of the fast which start today for me… i am just concerned and scared i want to be healthy again, i dont sleep on water veins anymore, so thats solved, since i know they caused my cancer i slept on them non stop for 3 years ignoring my body’s signals. So thats my question and main concern, why, since i have not eaten any solids and strictly kep to the breuss fast, why is the tumor not gone? i dont want to lose hope but i am scared… i hope you answer me back soon, i havent been succesful getting much feedback on other sites.

    sincerely,
    Sim

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Sim,
We put at least 15 terminal cancer patients through a juice fasting program. Some are alive and healthy one year later. Others died as the cancer was too advanced and they came in weeks or days before death. We discovered that most cancer had a time of remission on juice fasting. Pain, inflammation and tumor mass decrease in almost every patient. But the tumors adjusted to the low blood sugar levels and often came back with a vengeance after seeking weeks of marked improvements. The cause was angiogenisis the continual development of new blood vessels to feed the tumor. We modified the treatment buy adding a product called tumorx. Internally and externally. We had success with this treatment as effect is similar to a chemical burn and cauterized the blood vessels around the tumor and killed all infections. But this also was a learning curve and we had to develop new methods of application and had to reduce the oral intake during the earlier stages of detoxification as it was just to much. I will be writing my thesis over the next few months. We have tumorx here in the philippines, the only country in the world at the present, and can ship it to any country but it is not without risk and the treatment is very painful. It is also far more effective with tumors that are close to the surface of the skin. Also the length of time needed for a juice fast to cure cancer is 50 to 60 days of fasting with restricted juice intake under 1 liter a day.

      • sim sim says:

        Dear Tom,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply to my concerns, I will definitely push the fast to 60 days if need be to rid myself of the cancer, i’ll do anything, i am also as a last resort interest in that tumorx product you mentionned i today live in Australia Melbourne, thats where i reside currently, state of Victoria. The Phillippines are not too far to ship to here, you said its very painful and that is scary, my tumor is right at the surface its a hard lump , though i think it seems to be softening a little bit, but it could be wishful thinking. I will try the fast part first up to 60 days if need be, I will keep you informed here of how i go and especially if i notice it getting better or worse. Do you maybe have a website you recommend to look up that tumorx, and do you have a detox or clinic where u treat patients i am thinking of seeking more alternative help if the fast after 60 days doesn’t cure me.

Also Thank you Keith101 kindly for your encouraging words they have touched my heart.

Did you have other female patients in this predicament? and what did they do? • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Tad,
His is right and that is why I recommend juice fasting. It is also more therapeutic that water fasting.
Why are you taking the pills and what are they?

    • Tad says:

      Dear Tom and Keith,

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. This is my son-in-low case and he lives in Poland, I am in US. Here is his explanation:

I visited a doctor yesterday and found out that the inflammation that I had before is coming back which caused swelling of the liver. During the ultrasound test it turned out that the current size of my liver is 17 cm (6,7 inch) and the upper limit of normal is 12 cm (4,7 inch). I was surprised by this result because I felt no discomfort from the liver lately and while going to doctor now. I was convinced that everything is in order. This morning I did the test that the doctor prescribed me yesterday, but the results I have tomorrow and some of them in about 2 weeks. Only the results of these studies depends on my stay in the hospital at which I would have done such a re-examination of what I had done 4 months ago.

I was convinced that my body eliminated entirely the liver a virus after taking medicine and there is no recurrence of inflammation, but yesterday proved it could happen again. As I know, enlarged liver may be caused by many factors, but In my case I do not live in the environment in which i would inhale any chemicals, nor drink alcohol, and I am careful when I am taking medicine, although in recent days due to the cold virus I was taking more pills, but those were not strong pills nor drugs in large quantities. Perhaps the test will explain the cause of enlargement of my liver. I pray that this was not a recurrence of inflammation.

Drugs I use now are: Hepa Merz, Heparegen, Essentiale Forte
My height is 184 cm = 72.4 in , the weight -187 lbs

      Hepa Merz
The drug has beneficial effects on the function of the liver, liver encephalopathy phenomenon reduces inflammation in the liver (psychometric improves performance). I believe that the mechanism of action gepatoprotektornogo associated with inhibition (in therapeutic doses) biosynthesis of urea.

Heparegen (thiazalidine-4-carboxylic acid) and D-penicillamine on the blood ammonia concentration and on some ammonia metabolizing enzymes in liver and brain of rats intoxicated with ethanol. It seems, that both drugs decrease ammonia concentration and simultaneously elevate liver and brain glutamine synthetase activity. The effect of D-penicillamine on the nitrogen metabolism in the damaged liver appears to be more favorable than that of Heparegen.

Essentiale Forte is an Italian made specialty pharmaceutical which is manufactured by Nattermann. Essentiale Forte capsules contain phospholipids linolenic, linoleic and oleic acid as well as a blend of B vitamins.
European and Russian steroid users often use Essentiale Forte in an effort to maintain optimum hepatatic function. Some feel this may be an effective way to combat a few of the toxic effects of anabolic steroids.

      Thanks,
      Tad

Hi! I was wondering how long it takes to recover & get back to normal after a water fast? I’ve been very weak & lightheaded throughout my fast. I fasted almost 7 days before I had a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice last night, hoping it would help me be able to stand – I was 4 hours shy of 7 days of water only. It didn’t help. I ate for the first time tonight – about a fistful of food & I am really uncomfortably full. So I guess I overdid it. I’m still experiencing the same level of weakness I had throughout my fast. Neither juice nor food has helped yet. So I’m wondering how long it will take for me to be able to be up & walking around again?

Hi Tom-I have a question for you

I have read here that while fasting, the body uses up its fat stores before it turns to muscle fibers-but today, my quads are slightly sore, and the only times this happens is when I’ve either worked out, or they’re breaking down because I’ve stopped exercising.

I hope this is not the case-I don’t want to lose muscle mass on this fast-but if I do, it cannot be helped. There are a lot of reports stating that the body begins to break down muscle fibers if it thinks there’s a famine situation, leaving fat stores for last. In your experience-is it the same for everybody?

      Hi Once,
I did a 30 day juice fast and was back benching 200 lb in 14 days which is where I left off at the start of the fast.
For competition body building the standard is a 10 day water fast to get the cuts.
The body mag photo covers are all all taken after water fasting.
      Are you weightlifting?

      • Once says:

oh no…just the opposite. I got sick in March, and then went through a gigantic depression – my oldest daughter had a terrible crisis and I haven’t really recovered. She is recovering thankfully, with a lot of support. My workouts, which included running, spinning and weightlifting went by the wayside-I gained close to 20 lbs eating fatty awful foods that have never been a part of my diet-like red meat, and a lot of sugar. I couldn’t pull out of my depression this time, and I didn’t want to bore anybody, so I’ve been “waiting it out”. I recently watched a medical lecture on depression-I did not realize that it is common for it to come and go in rhythmic cycles. All I know is that when it’s gone, I have some energy and drive and try to get things done.

I have been looking forward to running again, but have to lose some weight first. I do still have a good layer of muscle underneath that I was counting on to help me get back in shape-if that gets catabolized-there will be nothing but flab.

    Hi Once
Your body will use up muscle for amino acids on water fasting.
Over waight, or not over waight.
The body adapts on water and needs to sustain itself.
The body goes into ketosis on day 3 using fat stores for fuel, it will use up muscle, but the muscle ratio to fat burning is a lot less, hence you will loose more fat than muscle until the body goes into starvation mode.
    Regards Keith

    Thanks Keith.

Since I am not water fasting, I won’t worry about it. Since you are answering questions-I launched a couple of searches on subjects that are pertinent to my fast, and saw that Tom was doing a lot of medical research. He was asking for hair samples last year from a person who suffered hair loss, to look for mineral deficiencies etc-do you know the findings? Also, most fasters at the clinic are prescription-free. Tom found damage to red blood cells caused by prescription Adderal taken on a water fast, and was looking into it further. Does he have any further info? Should I discontinue thyroid medication if I decide to water fast?

  92. keith101 keith101 says:

    Hi Once
No i dont know the findings myself.
Is your Thyroid under or over active.
What medication are you on for your thyroid?
    Regards Keith.

    • Once says:

I’m hypothyroid. I take Synthroid and Thyrolar, which covers both T3 and T4. I still feel hypothyroid but my doctor says my blood levels look good now. I was also prescribed Adderal for attention deficit, but the benefits have ceased-and I will not increase my dosage because I get irregular heartbeats. My ticker is one organ that I know functions well and I’m not going to mess with it just so I can stay focused.

    Hi Once
My thyroid was over active i was on beta blockers to start with to slow my heart rate down, then i was given iodine pills. I was on these for about 7 yrs before i decided to go ahead with the radio active pill to kill of part of the thyroid. I had to avoid going near people for 2 weeks. I now take levelthroxine, and will be on these for life, have you been offered the radio active pill?
I understand how you feel trust me iv been there with the over active thyroid, its a total nightmare.
    Regards Keith.

    Hi Tom-
If you’re still there, can you tell me about the hemp powder on a juice fast-what is the best way to take it-and did you do any further study on damage to red blood cells by Adderal. Also have you done any research on autoimmune diseases?

    • Tom Coghill Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Once,
Adderall is a brand-name psychostimulant medication composed of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, which is thought to work by increasing the amount of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.[1] Adderall is widely reported to increase alertness, libido, concentration and overall cognitive performance while decreasing user fatigue. All stimulants reduce the effectiveness of the immune system. Your body goes into the energy first and digestion and healing go to the back burner. This is a strong drug and you will do more damage to your body taking it than the short term benefits your are receiving. Hemp protein is the most amazing protein on earth and spirulina second. Two tablespoons on a fast could have a powerful therapeutic effect. Not sure on the best way to take it. Try mixing with juice.
